On The Nature of Fasting

Funny how our mind works. I’m sure many of us could relate about days where we are so busy with tasks or a project that even though it’s supposed to be “time to eat” we keep pushing it aside to finish up with what we are trying to accomplish. Or you’re running late for work in the morning and didn‘t get to eat breakfast. More often than not, you may notice that even though you didn’t eat, you weren’t especially hungry. In fact, you weren’t too worried about it. You knew that you could get something to eat later. By default, you were practicing a form of fasting. It wasn’t that big of a deal and you survived the day without dying because you didn’t get to eat a meal. 😉

Now on the flipside, when you conscientiously choose to fast more than at least 12 hours, suddenly something in your brain goes off…”oh, no! I’m gonna starve! “Why do I all of sudden feel so hungry?” “I can’t stop thinking of when I’m gonna eat next.” The brain goes into overdrive thinking about depravation. It’s that old story about don’t think of the pink elephant… of course, now that’s all you can think about.

Logically, we can know that we will be just fine without a meal or two. Goodness, for hundreds of years our ancestors didn’t snack every two or three hours. They built this country without counting their macros. Ok, you get the picture. Just some food for thought…pardon the pun… we want what we can’t have. That’s where the emotions override the logical part of our brain knowing that will be OK if we skip a meal or two. If you’re practicing fasting and fasting longer starts to make you very nervous, know that you’ll be OK. There has to be shift in perspective. If you constantly feed yourself every 2 to 3 hours, realize that you’ve created your body to want food every 2 to 3 hours. You just have to retrain your body to not expect that. Don‘t let the scarcity mindset take over. You can accomplish whatever you put your mind to! 💪🏻❤️
